Donna Summer
Crayons

It’s a bit of a misrepresentation that the buzz about disco’s biggest hit-maker is that Donna Summer is “returning” with her first full-length album in 17 years: Well, that is true, but to dance/techno audiences, her relatively recent dance-hits “You’re So Beautiful” and “Love Is The Healer” show she’s still a force. Of course, pop-radio is inherently age-ist, and Summer’s recruitment of contemporary hit-writers like Evan Bogart (co-writer of Rihanna's "SOS") and Lester Mendez (Shakira) is a smart move. She pulls the very current-sounding “Stamp Your Feet” but is still age-appropriate. The smooth, mid-tempo “Drivin’ Down Brazil” can be claimed as her own, although it sounds like a stand-by vehicle for Shakira. But we forget that right away. Also, Summer’s willingness to let producers play voice-manipulation with her vocals demonstrates she’s still game to try new things. Although it was probably not its purpose, Crayons is the best project to remind us that she’s more than just a diva of disco.

The Dusty Foot Philosopher (CD/DVD Deluxe Edition)
Interdependent Media
A reissue of acclaimed 2005 masterpiece with a companion DVD, which may justify its re-emergence. The Toronto-based/Somalia-fled hip-hop artist blends world-music, largely African, with his lamenting rhymes.
Laurent Wolf
Wash My World (Import)
Sony/BMG Europe
Frenchmen DJ Laurent keeps his house-music straight-ahead and ghetto. Since 2001, he’s been a dedicated whiz at both mixing tribal-anthems for a staggering list of compilations, as well as releasing a staggering number of original dance-singles and albums, including his recent No. 1 hit in his homeland, “No Stress.” On Wash My World, “I Pray” begins with a subtle, ethereal swirl of strings that bangs into an undeniable groove, while complementing the high-caliber, somewhat classical arrangements. The title-track, despite its soulful female-vocal, is basically techno-by-numbers – it takes the genre nowhere. Nonetheless, Wolf is prolific, and he’s a master at creating dance-music that shakes the soul and the booty.
